چکیده

The objective of this study was to investigate the regression relations between vegetation indices derived from remotely-sensed data of single and mixed forest regeneration plots. Loblolly pine (Pinos faeda L.J seedlings, sweelgum (Liquidambar sfyraciflua L.) seedlings and broomsedge (Andropogon virginiws L.) grass were arranged in a factorial combination addition series experiment and replicated four limes in a randomized complete block design. The remotely-sensed data were obtained using the Barnes Multiband Modular Radiometer (MMR) and a 35 mm camera between 26 June and 6 July, 1990. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the ratio index (RI) were computed using the bidirectional reflectance factors obtained with the MMR sensor. Color 35 mm s!ides were used lo independently estimate percent vegetative cover and percent bare soil exposed to the field of view of the radiometer. These data were used lo generate a corrected normalized diflerence vegetation index (CNDVI) which alleviated the effect of bare soil exposed lo the radiometer. The relationships among the vegetation indices (Us) and leaf area (LA) and above-ground biomass (810) in the single and mixed forest regeneralion plots were quite variable. The best relationship between LA and BIO achieved among the spectrally-derived vegetation indices was obrained with the CNDVI, which generated prediction equations that accounted for over 82 percent of the variability from the single loblolly and sweetgum plots. The relationships and amount of variability explained among the Vfs and LA and 810 decreased in the plots that contained two or more species. These data show the importance of correcting for bare Soit interference IO spectrally-derived Vls.

Potential of Landsat-8 spectral indices to estimate forest biomass

Forest ecosystems are among the largest terrestrial carbon reservoirs on our planet earth thus playing a vital role in global carbon cycle. Presently, remote sensing techniques provide proper estimates of forest biomass and quantify carbon stocks. The present study has explored Landsat-8 sensor product and evaluated its application in biomass mapping and estimation. The specific objectives were...

High density biomass estimation: Testing the utility of Vegetation Indices and the Random Forest Regression algorithm

Accurate estimates of wetland above ground biomass (AGB) have increasingly been identified as a critical component for an efficient wetland monitoring and management system. Multispectral remote sensing based indices have proven inadequate in estimating biomass especially at high canopy density. In this study we investigated the use of vegetation indices derived from field hyperspectral data to...

Estimating Yellow Starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis) Leaf Area Index and Aboveground Biomass with the Use of Hyperspectral Data

Hyperspectral remote-sensed data were obtained via a Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager-II (CASI-II) and used to estimate leaf-area index (LAI) and aboveground biomass of a highly invasive weed species, yellow starthistle (YST). In parallel, 34 ground-based field plots were used to measure aboveground biomass and LAI to develop and validate hyperspectral-based models for estimating these me...

Determine the most suitable Allometric equations for Estimating Above-ground Biomass of the Juniperus excelsa

Today, modeling and determination of allometric equations of forest trees, especially Junipers trees, are very important for determination of biological status and carbon storage capacity of forest species. The aim of this study was to determine the most suitable allometric equations for estimating the biomass of leaf, sub branch, main branch, trunk, and biomass of total Juniperus excelsa tr...

Post-fire species composition and regeneration of understory vegetation in a boreal forest in central Sweden

Post-fire survival, composition and regeneration of understory species in the boreal forest have shown to be affected by several factors, where consumption of the organic soil layer together with altered soil properties play important parts. There has however also been shown that the pre-fire site characteristics affect the post-fire understory vegetation. This study aimed to investigate the ef...
